Description

Spiezia et al identified risk factors associated with postoperative bleeding in children undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass. These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from the University of Padua.

Patient selection: pediatric patient from 1 to 168 months old undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass

Outcome: 24-hour postoperative blood loss (including chest tube drainage)

Predictors of postoperative bleeding:

(1) age < 7.7 months

(2) postoperative platelet count < 109 * 10^9/L

(3) postoperative plasma D-dimer >= 2,350 micrograms/L

Additional factors associated with bleeding:

(1) long duration of cardiopulmonary bypass
