Tan et al identified predictors for a neonate being admitted to the neonatal ICU following labor induction at term. These can help to identify a newborn who may require more aggressive management after delivery. The authors are from the University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur.
Predictors from multivariate analysis:
(1) Bishop score < 5 at labor induction
(2) caesarean delivery
Additional factors identified during univariate analysis:
(1) gestational age <= 40 weeks (relative risk for gestation > 40 weeks 0.34)
(2) labor induction done for maternal diabetes mellitus
(3) estimated fetal weight < 2.5 kilograms by ultrasound
(4) prolonged induction to delivery interval (> 24 hours)
(5) umbilical cord pH < 7.1
where:
• Multiple gestations is not listed as a variable in Table 1.
