Wei et al reported factors associated with successful discontinuation of continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) in a pediatric patient. The authors are from the University of California San Diego and Rady Children's Hospital.
Patient selection: pediatric patient on continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), in the ICU
Successful discontinuation: remaining of CRRT for at least 7 days
Successful discontinuation of the RRT was predicted by a urine output > 0.5 mL per kg per hour in a 6 hour period before discontinuation. The prediction was lower if diuretics were administered.
Predictors of reinitiation:
(1) longer ICU stays
(2) failure to respond to diuretics
(3) less than 0.5 mL per kg per hour in 6 hour trial
