Yadollahi et al reported factors predictive of nosocomial pneumonia in a trauma patient who requires immediate interventions. The authors are from Shiraz University of Medical Sciences and Kerman University of Medical Sciences in Iran.
Patient selection: trauma patient requiring immediate intervention
Exclusion: discharge or death within 48 hours
Predictors of nosocomial pneumonia:
(1) Injury Severity Score (ISS) = 16
(2) intubation
(3) invasive mechanical ventilation
A patient with all 3 risk factors would be at significant risk of nosocomial pneumonia and should be monitored closely for its onset.
Almost half of the cases were due to Acinetobacter baumannii or coagulase negative Staphylococci.
