The mixture of dry ice and xylene solvents is an economical way to make a cooling bath in the laboratory.
Solvents that can be mixed with dry ice:
(1) o-xylene and p-xylene
(2) o-xylene and m-xylene
For an o-xylene and p-xylene mixture the relative proportions make a straight line over the temperature range of -30 to -70°C.
temperature in °C =
= (0.6047 * (percent o-xylene)) - 80.17
percent o-xylene to use =
= ((temperature target) + 80.17) / (0.6047)
= (1.6537 * (temperature target)) + 132.3
percent p-xylene =
= 100 - (percent o-xylene)
For an o-xylene and m-xylene mixture the relative proportions make a sigmoid-shaped line line.
A percent of o-xyelene from 49 to 100% gives temperatures that range from -26 to -50°C.
temperature in °C =
= (-0.005107 * ((percent o-xylene)^2)) + (1.29 * (percent o-xylene)) - 98.73
A percent of o-xyelene from 0 to 49% gives temperatures that range from --50 to -72°C.
temperature in °C =
= (0.005161 * ((percent o-xylene)^2)) + (0.1924* (percent o-xylene)) - 72.12
percent m-xylene =
= 100 - (percent o-xylene)
