Rabies can be transmitted between humans if percautions are not taken.
Ways that rabies can spread from human to human:
(1) bite
(2) exposure to body fluids (saliva, blood, tissue) to an open skin wound
(3) exposure to body fluids (saliva, blood, tissue) to a mucus membrane
(4) organ transplantation
Standard precautions to body fluids is sufficient to prevent spread within a hospital:
(1) gown
(2) goggles
(3) mask
(4) gloves
High risk procedures are intubating and suctioning.
If a person has a significant exposure then post-exposure prophylaxis should be given.
