Description

Costa et al reported prognostic factors for a patient with severe Chagasic heart failure. These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from Universidade Federal de Goias (UFG) in Brazil.

Patient selection: Chaga's disease with cardiomyopathy

Factors associated with increased mortality:

(1) non-sustained ventricular tachycardia (HR 2.1)

(2) indexed left atrial volume >= 72 mL per square meter (indexed to body surface area, HR 3.5)

Other factors:

(1) NYHA functional class III or IV

The overall survival was 11% at 7.5 years.
