Fernandez-Hidalgo et al identified prognostic factors for a patient Health Care-Associated Infective Endocarditis (HAIE). The authors are from Hospital Universitari Vall d'Hebron and Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona in Spain.
Risk factors for in-hospital or 1 year mortality:
(1) stroke
(2) congestive heart failure (CHF)
(3) failure to perform surgery when indicated
(4) acute renal failure
where:
• Surgery may not be performed if the patient is a poor surgical candidate due to comorbid disease.
Infections with Enterococcus species were associated with a reduced mortality in-hospital and by 1 year.
