Description

Hassanian-Moghaddam et al identified factors impacting outcome following methanol poisoning. These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from Shaheed Beheshti Medical University in Tehran.

Mortality rate: almost 50%

Blindness in survivors: 23%

Factors associated with a poor prognosis:

(1) admission arterial pH < 7.00

(2) coma on admission

(3) interval between methanol ingestion and hospital admission > 24 hours

(4) simultaneous presence of opium

Factors associated with better prognosis:

(1) simultaneous presence of ethanol
