Idro et al identified prognostic factors for a child with cerebral malaria admitted to Mulago Hospital in Uganda. These prognostic factors reflect multi-organ failure (MOF). The authors are from Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda.
Patient selection: child with cerebral malaria using the WHO criteria
Mortality rate: 7%
Risk factors for mortality:
(1) respiratory distress
(2) circulatory failure (associated with hypothermia, cold peripheries and dehydration)
(3) generalized hyporeflexia
(4) parasite density in whole blood >= 500,000 per µL
Neurological sequelae were seen in 5% of patients and were associatd with multiple convulsions on admission.
