Description

Jang et al reported prognostic factors for a patient with alcoholic ketoacidosis (AKA). This can help to identify a patient who may require more aggressive management. The authors are from Gyeongsang National University Hospital, Changwon Gyeongsang National University Hospital and Gyeongsang National University in South Korea.

Patient selection: alcoholic ketoacidosis (AKA)

Predictors for nonsurvival on multivariate analysis:

(1) serum albumin < 3.0 g/dL

(2) serum LDH concentration > 800 IU/L

Other factors identified on univariate analysis:

(1) logistic organ dysfunction score (LODS) > 6

(2) arterial pH < 7.0

Non-survivors also tended to have:

(1) need for inotropic support on admission (circulatory failure)

(2) need for mechanical ventilation (respiratory failure)

(3) need for renal replacement failure (renal failure)

(4) low prothrombin activity and/or thrombocytopenia (coagulation failure)
