Kahn and Blum identified prognostic factors observed in children with fulminating meningococcemia who did not survive.
Patient population: children from 4 months to 12 years of age admitted to a pediatric intensive care unit in Belgium
Unfavorable criteria seen in nonsurvivors:
(1) coma stage II or worse (nonrousable child without spontaneous eye movements)
(2) shock (systolic blood pressure < 60 mm Hg)
(3) low or normal initial total blood leukocyte count (<= 10,000 per µL), or low total polymorphonuclear count (<= 2,000 per µL)
(4) thrombocytopenia (platelet count <= 150,000 per µL) and DIC
(5) metabolic acidosis (bicarbonate <= 15 mEq/L and/or pH <= 7.30)
