Description

Sharma et al identified a number of prognostic factors affecting survival in a woman with advanced ovarian cancer. The authors are from the University of Sydney and the Imperial College London.

Patient selection: new diagnosis of Stage III or IV ovarian cancer

Parameters identified on multivariate analysis:

(1) Glasgow prognostic score (GPS), based on serum C-reactive protein and albumin

(2) tumor histology

(3) serum alkaline phosphatase

(4) initial surgery

Interpretation:

• The Glasgow Prognostic Score is a marker for systemic inflammation.

• The higher the GPS and the greater the number of other prognostic factors the worse the patient's overall survival.

Addiitional factors to consider from univariate analysis:

(1) poor performance status

(2) ascites
