Description

Shiraishi et al identified prognostic factors for a patient with a large gastric cancer. These can help to identify a patient who may require more aggressive management. The authors are from Oita University in Japan.

Patient selection: large gastric cancer >= 10 cm in diameter, status post gastrectomy

Median survival in population: 15 months

5-Year survival rate: 22%

Predictors of worse survival:

(1) serosal invasion (OR 3.1)

(2) extragastric lymph node metastases (OR 2.1)

(3) liver metastases (OR 3.8)

Extent of lymph node dissection was not prognostic.
