Soria et al identified prognostic factors for a male with squamous cell carcinoma of the penis. These can help to identify a patient who may require more aggressive management. The authors are from Institut Gustave-Roussy in Villejuif, France.
Patient selection: male with squamous cell carcinoma of the penis
Factors from multivariate analysis associated with a worse prognosis:
(1) tumor invasion of the corpus cavernosum and/or spongiosum
(2) clinically palpable lymph nodes
Relapse into regional lymph nodes is a poor prognostic sign.
The presence of a verrucous carcinoma (well-differentiated squamous cell carcinoma) was associated with an excellent prognosis. These tumors rarely developed the features associated with a poor prognosis.
