Gold et al developed a prognostic nomogram for a patient with a primary gastrointestinal tumor (GIST). These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from multiple hospitals in the United States and Spain.
Patient selection: primary GIST following complete surgical excision
Parameters:
(1) diameter in centimeters
(2) mitotic rate per 50 high power microscopic fields (hpf)
(3) site

Points |
< 15 cm |
(-0.198 * ((diameter)^2)) + (7.826 * (points)) - 0.07 |
>= 15 cm |
49.73 + (1.007 * (diameter)) |
where:
• The diameter in the nomogram goes to 50 cm or 0.5 meter.

• minimum score: 0
• maximum score: 220
• The higher the score the worse the prognosis.
