Description

Bahamondes et al developed a prognostic score for the infertile couple, giving the probability of conception within 3 years of initial evaluation. The intent was to give the couple an accurate estimate of their chances to conceive, thereby reducing the dropout rate due to discouragement. The study was performed in Cordoba, Argentina; the authors are from Campinas, Brazil.

Parameters for score:

(1) type of infertility

(2) history of pelvic surgery in the woman

(3) normalcy of the woman's menstrual cycle

(4) age of the woman in years

(5) duration of infertility

(6) normal sperm morphology

Interpretation:

• The best prognosis is for the couple with a high percent normal sperm in the male, a young age for the woman, secondary infertility, few years of infertility, no history of pelvic surgery and abnormal menstrual cycles.
