Myelodysplasia with monocytosis may be a distinct subgroup of myelodysplasia that is associated with a worse prognosis.
Patient selection:
(1) history of myelodysplasia
(2) absolute monocytosis (> 1,000 per µL with >10% of differential count for > 3 months)
The patient may meet criteria for chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML).
Findings that may be associated with disease progression:
(1) multilineage dysplasia
(2) multiple karyotypic abnormalities
(3) hypercellular bone marrow
