Stachon et al evaluated patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) relative to the presence or absence of nucleated red blood cells (NRBCs). The authors are from BG-University Hospital Bergmannsheil and Ruhr University in Bochum, Germany.
The appearance of nucleated red blood cells is associated with decreased survival. The disappearance of nucleated red blood cells is associated with improved survival.
The higher the nucleated red blood cell count the greater the mortality.
