Pyemotes ventricosus is a tiny mite that can cause an occupational dermatitis.
Synonym: grain itch mite, straw itch mite, hay itch mite
Risk factors:
(1) occupational exposure to agricultural products (grains, straw, herbs)
(2) lack of fumigant or other pest control measure
(3) exposure during the summer
Clinical features:
(1) pruritic dermatitis with erythematous base, primarily on hands and forearms
(2) flu-like illness
Laboratory findings:
(1) microscopic examination for mites in implicated products and/or tape test of affected skin
Differential diagnosis:
(1) allergic contact dermatitis
