A number of microorganisms may be read by an automated hematology analyzer as a platelet, resulting in a falsely elevated platelelt count.
The microorganisms may be present:
(1) in vivo as an infection
(2) in vitro as a result of specimen contamination
Some microorganisms that may be miscounted:
(1) Staphylococcus aureus
(2) Candida species
(3) Trypanosomiasis
