Psychiatric effects of quinolone antibiotics:
(1) psychosis
(2) altered mental status, confusion or delirium
(3) insomnia
(4) mania
Features of the drug effect:
(1) new onset or worsening of a psychiatric disorder after starting a quinolone antibiotic
(2) reversal of the psychiatric disorder after discontinuation of the quinolone
(3) no better explanation for the psychiatric disorder
Risk factors:
(1) renal insufficiency
(2) underlying central nervous system disorder
(3) older age
