A pedophile may use a number of psychological defenses to avoid consequences of actions. Sometimes these are directed at the person himself or towards others.
Patient selection: pedophile
Psychological defenses:
(1) denial that actions were wrong (it didn't happen)
(2) minimization (it happened but is not that big of a deal)
(3) justification (it happened but it was for the child's benefit)
(4) fabrication(s) about what was going on (it happened but for a "plausible" reason)
(5) attack anyone raising questions (provide misdirection or lashes out as a trapped animal)
The person can become quite adept at manipulating others.
