A patient being treated for hepatic echinococcosis may suffer a number of complications affecting the lung..
Problem During Therapy
Pulmonary Complication
spillage of viable cyst contents
secondary pulmonary echinococcosis
leakage of scolicidal solution through a cysto-bronchial fistula
chemical alveolitis or bronchitis with sclerosis and obstruction
leakage of bacteria through a cysto-bronchial fistula
pulmonary bronchiectasis, pneumonia or abscess
Secondary pulmonary complications as a result of the above:
(1) pulmonary fibrosis
(2) pulmonary hemorrhage
A scolicidal solution should not be injected into an hepatic cyst until it is known for certain that there are no fistulas connecting the cyst to other areas.
