A total pancreatectomy can affect the patient's subsequent quality of life (QOL).
Patient selectin: total pancreatectomy
Adverse effects after pancreatectomy:
(1) diabetes mellitus
(2) diarrhea
(3) malabsorption with malnutrition
(4) glucagon deficiency
(5) abdominal pain
The period of maximal adverse effects is the first year after surgery. If the adverse effects can be properly managed, then the patient's quality of life can be acceptable.
The physical component of the SF-36 was lower for:
(1) younger patients
(2) abdominal pain
(3) worse perception of body image
The mental component of the SF-36 was lower for:
(1) diabetes
(2) sexual dissatisfaction
(3) worse perception of body image
