Wall and Schnapp listed risk factors associated with radiation-induced lung injury. The authors are from Harborview Medical Center and the University of Washington at Seattle.
Risk factors associated with the amount of radiation delivered:
(1) high mean lung dose (uncommon in doses < 30 Gy but common if > 40 Gy)
(2) large area of lung volume irradiated
(3) delivery over a short period of time (resulting in a high rate of delivery)
(4) history of previous lung irradiation
Patient-related risk factors:
(1) poor performance status
(2) older age
(3) female gender
(4) pre-existing lung disease
Other risk factors:
(1) concurrent chemotherapy
(2) abrupt discontinuation of steroid therapy
