Description

A laboratory instrument may be replaced for a number of reasons. There should be clear benefits for the change, sufficient to justify any costs incurred.

Reasons to replace a laboratory instrument:

(1) obsolete

(2) significantly better technology available (see below)

(3) laboratory reoganization with different needs, such as automation

(4) unable to handle current or projected workload (exceeding maximum throughput)

(5) unable to handle the type of workload, such as STAT requests

(6) too expensive to operate

(7) unable to maintain

(8) hazard or safety concern

Better technology may result in:

(1) smaller sample requirement

(2) cheaper cost per test

(3) faster testing (greater throughput)

(4) improved accuracy and reliability of the result

(5) larger test menu

(6) less hands-on time
