Recommendations of Ribic et al for Identifying a Patient with Colon Cancer Who Is a Candidate for Fluorouracil-Based Adjuvant Chemotherapy Using Stage and Microsatellite Instability Status
Ribic et al recommended patients with colon cancer for fluorouracil-based chemotherapy based on microsatellite instability status and tumor stage. The authors are from multiple institutions in Canada, the United States and France.
Parameters:
(1) microsatellite instability (MSI) status
(2) tumor stage
A patient is a potential candidate for fluorouracil-based if chemotherapy if: the tumor shows both of the following:
(1) MSI status is no (stable) or low frequency instability
(2) tumor Stage II or III
A patient is unlikely to benefit from a fluorouracil regimen if the tumor shows high frequency MSI instability. Overall survival may be better without therapy than with.
