A patient infected with both Salmonella and Schistosomiasis may develop a chronic Salmonella infection that only resolves after treatment of the Schistosomiasis.
Clinical features:
(1) recurrent infections with a Salmonella species, often with bacteremia
(2) concurrent active infection with a Schistosoma species
(2a) urinary Schistosomiasis with S. haematobium
Treatment of the Salmonella infection alone results in an initial clearance only to be followed by a relapse later.
Cure requires initial treatment of the Schistosomiasis followed by antibiotic therapy of the Salmonellosis.
Differential diagnosis:
(1) Salmonella endocarditis, aortitis or infection of a prosthetic device
(2) repetitive Salmonella infection
(3) resistant Salmonella infection or inappropriate antibiotic therapy
