The United Kingdom Working Group identified diagnostic criteria for atopic dermatitis. They used logistic regression to develop 2 equations for predicting the probability of atopic dermatitis in a patient.
Factors most useful diagnostic criteria:
(1) history of flexural dermatitis
(2) visible flexural dermatitis
(3) onset of rash before 2 years of age
(4) rash itchy (pruritic)
(5) history of asthma
(6) history of dry skin

X =
= (2.4 * (points for history of flexural dermatitis)) + (1.3 * (points for visible flexural dermatitis)) + (3.7 * (points for onset before 2 years of age)) + (1.2 * (points for itchy rash)) + (1.9 * (points for history of asthma)) + (1.3 * (history of dry skin)) - 5.6
probability of atopic dermatitis =
= 1 / (1 + EXP((-1) * X))
For a pediatric patient < 16 years of age:
Y =
= (1.84 * (points for history of flexural dermatitis)) + (2.09 * (points for visible flexural dermatitis)) + (3.46 * (points for onset before 2 years of age)) + (1.71 * (points for itchy rash)) - 4.36
Note that a history of asthma and of dry skin are not in the pediatric equation
probability of atopic dermatitis =
= 1 / (1 + EXP((-1) * Y))
