A change in mass and/or linear velocity in a system can affect both the momentum and the kinetic energy. The relative change in momentum and energy can be determined from the relative changes in mass and speed.
momentum =
= (mass) * (velocity)
relative change in momentum =
= (relative change in momentum) * (relative change in velocity)
kinetic energy =
= 0.5 * (mass) * ((velocity)^2)
relative change in kinetic energy =
= (relative change in mass) * ((relative change in velocity)^2)
where:
• relative change = (new value) / (previous value)
