Lipemia may interfere with a number of laboratory tests. There are a number of methods to remove this interference, but each method has its pros and cons.
Methods of removing lipemic interference:
(1) centrifugation
(2) extraction and removal of the lipid with polar solvent (Lipoclear, other)
(3) dilution
Method |
Pros |
Cons |
centrifugation |
effectively removes lipids and allows further testing of many analytes |
lack of availability of ultracentrifuge, lipid soluble compounds removed |
extraction |
removes lipids allowing testing of cleared specimen |
lipid soluble compounds removed, chemicals may interfere with some analytes |
dilution |
allows measurement of lipid soluble compounds |
compounds at a low concentration may be diluted below the analytical level of detection, errors in making dilutions or calculations |
where:
• Verification studies should be performed with extraction methods to make sure that there is no interference with analytical methods.
