Sometimes it is necessary to remove bile acids from the body. One way is to absorb them onto a resin in the GI tract which allows them to be excreted. This interrupts the enterohepatic circulation for bile salts.
Exchange resins for absorption of bile acids within the GI tract include:
(1) cholestyramine
(2) colestipol
(3) colesevelam
(4) possibly sevelamer
Use:
(1) bile acid diarrhea (choleretic enteropathy)
(2) cholestasis, especially with pruritis
