Description

Osawa et al reviewed risk factors and prognostic factors for invasive aspergillosis in a liver transplant recipient from a living donor. The authors are from Kyoto University, Nagoya University and the Institute of Biomedical Research and Innovation in Kobe, Japan.

Risk factors:

(1) ICU stay > 1 day prior to the transplant

(2) pretransplant steroid administration for fulminant hepatitis

Factors that may be associated with a better outcome:

(1) prompt diagnosis

(2) therapy with lipid complex formulation of amphotericin B

Invasive aspergillosis tends to occur soon after the transplant. It is important to monitor the patient:

(1) by CT scans of the lungs

(2) serum ELISA assay for galactomannan
