A patient with New World Cutaneous Leishmaniasis (NWCL) may develop mucosal leishmaniasis (ML) if certain risk factors are present.
Patient selection: New World cutaneous leishmaniasis
Risk factor for developing mucosal leishmaniasis (ML):
(1) infection with Leishmania braziliensis or Leishmania panamensis
(2) infection acquired in Bolivia
(3) > 4 large lesions (area greater than 4-6 square cm, or 2.25 to 2.75 cm in diameter)
(4) present for more than 4 months
(5) located above the belt
(6) presence of immunosuppression
(7) inappropriate or inadequate treatment
