A youth who runs away does so for one or more reasons. The reality of family life is often far from idyllic.
Behavior or situation of a parent or guardian:
(1) physical abuse
(2) sexual abuse
(3) neglect
(4) emotional abuse
(5) rejection
(6) throwing the youth for no particularly good reason (“throwaway”)
(7) drug and/or alcohol abuse
(8) extreme poverty
(9) mental illness
The experience of bad behavior from a parent or guardian may make it easier for a runaway youth to accept that bad behavior from others.
