Description

Bile leak after cholecystectomy is uncommon. Some leaks are minor and asymptomatic. Others can be significant with morbidity for the patient.


Patient selection: cholecystectomy

 

Risk factors for bile leak:

(1) bile ducts of Luschka (subvesical duct; small ducts originating from the right hepatic lobe that course along the gallbladder bed to drain into extrahepatic bile ducts)

(2) accessory bile duct, such as the hepatocystic

(3) gangrenous cholecystitis

(4) technically difficult

(5) operator inexperience or error
