Description

The making and distributing of counterfeit drugs has become a major international problem, with some counterfeiters well-organized and funded. The harm to the patient may range from none to economic to poisoning to denial of therapeutic benefit.


 

Where counterfeit drugs are likely to be encountered:

(1) internet pharmacies

(2) developing countries (in some cases may be part of a national policy)

(3) shady drug store operations in the inner city

(4) anyone offering a drug much cheaper than usual retail price

(5) anyone offering a drug in repackaged containers

(6) anyone offering to sell a drug outside of the standard distribution chain

 

Drugs more likely to be fakes:

(1) drugs of potential abuse

(2) popular lifestyle drugs, like Viagra

(3) antiretrovirals for HIV

(4) high priced medications, such as erythropoietin
