Description

A patient with diabetes is at increased risk for falls, especially as the patient gets older.


 

Risk factors for falls in a diabetic:

(1) hypoglycemia

(2) peripheral neuropathy

(3) autonomic dysfunction with orthostatic hypotension

(4) visual impairment from cataract and/or retinopathy

(5) diabetic foot ulcers

(6) deconditioning

(7) a history of falls

(8) other comorbid conditions or medications associated with falls

 

The consequences of the falls is impacted by:

(1) osteoporosis

(2) age

(3) comorbid conditions

(4) the home environment
