Expulsion of an intrauterine device (IUD) results in contraception failure. A number of factors may impact the expulsion rate.

Risk factors for expulsion:
(1) time of placement post-partum (see table below)
(2) placement by an intern (postgraduate year 1)
(3) after vaginal delivery (versus after Cesarean section) if placement less than 4 weeks
(4) levonorgestrel intrauterine system if placement less than 4 weeks (versus copper)
