Neonatal Brachial Plexus Palsy (NBPP) may be observed in neonates, especially after a difficult delivery. In many patients it is transient, but it can lead to permanent disability.
Most affected patients underwent a vaginal delivery.
Presentation: flaccid paralysis of the arm, with passive range of motion greater than the active range.
Risk factors for NBPP include:
(1) shoulder dystocia
(2) forceps delivery
(3) group B Streptococcal osteomyelitis
(4) fetal macrosomia and/or gestational diabetes
(5) application of lateral traction to the neck during delivery
