Primary hyperparathyroidism may be complicated by nephrolithiasis, especially when certain risk factors are present.
Patient selection: primary hyperparathyroidism
Risk factors for stone formation:
(1) hypercalcuria
(2) oxaluria
(3) history of nephrolithiasis
(4) hypomagnesuria (Saponaro et al)
The risk declines after parathyroidectomy but may persist for some time.
