Peliosis Hepatis (PH) is a rare condition associated with a number of risk factors.
Drug therapy associated with PH:
(1) oral contraceptives
(2) androgenic and anabolic steroids
(3) corticosteroids
(4) tamoxifen
(5) thiopurines
(6) chronic vitamin A
Infections associated with PH:
(1) Bartonella henselae (bacillary peliosis) in patients with severe immunosuppression (HIV, transplantation)
(2) tuberculosis
(3) leprosy
Malignant disorders:
(1) hepatocellular carcinoma
(2) hairy cell leukemia
(3) Hodgkin's disease
(4) angioimmunoblastic lymphadenopathy
(5) Waldenstrom's macroglobulinemia
(6) myeloproliferative disorders
(7) seminoma
Other factors:
(1) malnutrition including cancer cachexia
A patient may develop peliosis without any of these risk factors.
