A person who abuses cannabis may become psychotic. Most people who use marijuana are at low risk, but the risk increases when certain factors are present.
Risk factors for psychosis in a person who uses cannabis:
(1) heavy daily use
(2) long-term use (> 5 years)
(3) use of high potency forms of cannabis, such as sinsemilla ("skunk")
(4) vulnerable mental state or pre-existing psychotic disorder
(5) use in combination with amphetamines and/or hallucinogenic drugs
The psychosis associated with cannabis misuse is potentially reversible unless the person has a pre-existing psychotic disorder.
