A seafarer may face several factors that may contribute to an increased risk for suicide.
Seafarer related:
(1) existing mental health issues, especially depression
(2) lack of access to mental health services
(3) separation from family and friends (social isolation)
(4) boredom
(5) constant stress with lack of sleep
(6) male sex
Ship related:
(1) worker abuse and harassment
(2) hostility between crew members, including cultural or religious conflicts
(3) prolonged time at sea without respite
(4) lack of attention to morale, such as food and entertainment
