Description

Male soldiers are at risk for developing sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Some soldiers are at greater risk than others, and this high risk group is important for the spread of STDs, including antibiotic resistant strains.

The primary risk factor for repeated sexually transmitted disease is a past history of sexually transmitted disease.

Additional factors to consider:

(1) having sex with sex workers

(2) refusal to wear protection or to engage in other safe-sex practices

(3) multiple and frequently changed sex partners

(4) intoxication associated with sex

(5) tendency to high risk behaviors

(6) refusal to be tested for STD

(7) refusal to adhere to STD medication

(8) being stationed in a region where there is a high rate of STDs

A male soldier who is identified as being high risk should be targeted for more aggressive management.
