Description

The presence of certain risk factors may cause an adolescent to consider suicide. Identifying an adolescent with one or more risk factors can allow for a preventive intervention.


 

Risk factors for adolescent suicide:

(1) male, or female who is pregnant and unwed

(2) family problems

(2a) parental absence

(2b) parental abuse

(2c) parental substance abuse

(2d) family history of suicide

(2e) conflict with parents

(3) alcohol and/or substance abuse

(4) behavioral problems

(4a) implusivity

(4b) explosiveness

(4c) attention deficit hyperactivity disorder

(4d) depression or bipolar disorder

(5) social problems

(5a) academic problems

(5b) conduct problems or disciplinary crisis

(5c) humiliation

(5d) married with socioeconomic problems

(6) epilepsy

(7) previous suicide attempts

(8) recent exposure to a suicide attempt

(9) availability of a lethal weapon or source of self-harm
