A person may try to commit suicide by interacting with a railroad or subway. This method may not be quick or certain. It also has a negative impact on bystanders and railroad employees.
The attempt may involve:
(1) leaping in front of a moving train
(2) lying across the track (getting run over)
(3) contacting the third rail or other electrical source
(4) driving a car into a train
Risk factors:
(1) adolescent or young adult
(2) male gender
(3) history of serious mental illness
(4) being drunk
(5) imitative (in response to a recent report in mass media)
(6) suicidal or history of suicide attempt
(7) living alone
(8) ready access to a train or subway
Attempts tend to occur more frequent during late morning or early afternoon.
