Alnsasra et al reported risk factors associated with stroke in patients undergoing cardiac transplant. These can help to identify a patient who may require greater care during and after surgery. The authors are from the Mayo Clinic.
Patient selection: cardiac transplantation
Outcome: stroke, either hemorrhagic or ischemic
Frequency in study: 10.7%
Risk factors for stroke include:
(2) diabetes (HR 2.6)
(3) poor kidney function (HR 1.8 per 0.5 mg/dL increase)
(4) combined organ transplantation (HR 2.0)
(5) cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection (HR 2.1)
Additional risk factors:
(1) age at surgery (adjusted HR 1.3)
The presence of a stroke of any type increased the risk of death almost 2-fold.
