Ihaddadene et al identified risk factors for an occult malignancy in a patient with an unprovoked venous thromboembolism (VTE). These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from multiple institutions in Canada.
Patient selection: first unprovoked venous thromboembolism (VTE) and no known malignancy
Outcome: eventual diagnosis of malignancy (within 5 years)
Risk factors:
(1) age >= 60 years (hazard ratio 3.1)
(2) current smoker (hazard ratio 2.8)
(3) history of a previous provoked VTE (hazard ratio 3.2)
